Childhood Memories Influence Artwork

Childhood Memories Influence Artwork

As I child and into my adulthood I was a sewer. It all started when I joined the 4H Club at about 10 years old. I remember my first project being a simple apron - a flat piece of material with a gusset for the tie which also made the gathers. It did have a pocket as well which was the hardest part. Mine was grey gingham with red zig-zag rick rack. The next project was an organza apron gathered on a band with an embroidered pocket. Mine was a pale aqua - still one of my favourite colours. That project brought out my perfectionism at an early age! There were a few episodes of ripping stitches!

i continued my sewing well into my mid adulthood. Today it seems to be mending!

The other day I was reminiscing about my sewing box that I got when I went to 4H. I still have it! It is displayed here with “Twist of Lime” I don’t use many greens in my abstract or figurative work but if I do they tend to be in the family of lime green! There is some of that aqua colour cropping in too!

I went on to think about a sewing project I did that was a simple wrap dress with 3 arm holes. Actually an ingenious design. I no longer have the pattern but I found it on EBay for $42.00

Guess what colour the dress was? Lime green with hot pink daisy like flowers.

This retro dress reminded me of the flowers.

So not only does lime green show up in my artwork but so do sewing patterns used as collage paper.

Here is a painting where I utilized sewing patterns in the painting. https://pattscrivenerartist.com/products/earth-s-layers

I am sure if you look back into your past childhood memories you will see how they come into play in your own artwork. Besides that it is fun to reminisce. I remember that dress and sewing those aprons like it was yesterday!

Now where did I put my keys!
